How We Tested
We bought four top-rated air purifiers and our reviewers tested them for over 1,050 hours. We asked our testers to consider the most important features when using these air purifiers, from their filter type to their footprint. We've outlined what matters most here so that you, too, know what to look for when shopping.
What to Look for in an Air Purifier
Size A larger room requires a higher-capacity air purifier. This is measured by clean air delivery rate, or CADR, which indicates how many particles are filtered and how fast. For the most effective air purifier, choose one that has a CADR rating that’s at least two-thirds the size of the room. (A 100-square-foot room would have a CADR rating of at least 67.)
Efficiency Air purifiers clean a room’s air at different intervals over the course of one hour. This is called air change per hour, or ACH rate (which varies from 2-6). An ACH rate of 2 means the air will be cleaned every 30 minutes, an ACH rate of 4 means the air will be cleaned every 15 minutes, and an ACH rate of 6 means the air will be cleaned every 10 minutes.
Filter type There are three main types of filters: HEPA filters, charcoal or active carbon filters, and washable filters. HEPA filters are most effective at reducing common allergens (pet dander, pollen, and dust), but charcoal or active carbon filters remove irritants like smoke or cooking smells more effectively. Washable filters are more cost efficient and environmentally friendly since the entire filter does not need to be replaced.

Excellent
What We Like
- Useful air quality indicator light
- Quiet on lower settings
- Convenient eco and auto settings
What We Don't Like
- Instruction manual needs more info
- Loud on highest setting
“The combination of features and effective air purification makes it a good buy,” our tester revealed of this air purifier. Our reviewer particularly liked the air quality indicator light, the energy-saving shut-off feature, and the auto setting. “The machine can self-detect changes in air quality and increase filtration speed,” she explained. On the other hand, she didn’t like how loud the highest setting gets. Our tester also commented, “While the purifier includes instructions on how to use each feature, it doesn’t explain what they do or why they’re needed.” However, she gave it high marks for effectiveness: “After only a few hours, the rooms in which the unit was tested smelled fresher, even with a shedding dog.”
Test Results: Honeywell True HEPA Allergen Remover HPA 300 (Runner-Up, Best Overall)
Very Good
What We Like
- Effective in large rooms
- Specific setting for allergies
- HEPA filters only need to be changed yearly
Our tester recommended this air purifier for its effective filtration, capacity for large rooms, and unique settings. “Unlike with other purifiers, this unit offers settings not in terms of quietest to loudest, but instead, by what purpose they serve,” our reviewer reported. “There's a recommended everyday setting, as well as extra settings specific to allergies or viral particles.” The negatives? Our tester found this much louder than other models, especially on its turbo setting, and also didn’t like its bulkiness. The takeaway? “This purifier is worth buying for users who need a very large space filtered and aren't concerned with appearance or sound,” our reviewer explained.

On the flip side, there are few advanced features—like an auto shut-off or timer—and it’s designed for smaller rooms. Overall? “This product is absolutely worth buying for price-conscious buyers with small rooms,” our tester said.
